Indonesia has almost entirely a tropical climate. Despite being relatively hot, it still has lot of humidity. Indonesia is blessed with two seasons, namely dry and rainy. The dry season occurs in June-September, whilst the rainy season occurs in December-March.
Indonesia also experiences a number of climates, mostly tropical rainforest (with highest precipitation), followed by tropical monsoon and tropical savanna (with lowest precipitation).
Due to the length of Indonesian archipelago that stretch so far from end to end, it is hard to generalize Indonesia’s climate. So you should check our list below of every destination’s local climate.
Western Indonesia destinations
1) Bangka Belitung
Best month to visit Bangka Belitung is between February-March and between June-August when it’s the driest.
The climate here is tropical. Bangka & Belitung are islands with significant rainfalls. Even in the driest month there is a lot of rain. The average temperature in Bangka Belitung is 27.5 °C. About 3218 mm of precipitation falls annually.
The driest month is August, with 186 mm of rain. Most of the precipitation here falls in November, averaging 405 mm. May is the warmest month of the year. The temperature in May averages 28.1 °C. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 27.0 °C.
Best month to visit Krakatoa is May through October considering that this is the dry season. Visiting during the wet season is also possible, but there is a greater chance of rain and the ocean is rougher.
Krakatoa’s climate depends on Lampung region’s climate. Low temperatures around 23°C and highs around 31°C. Rain will mostly occur during December-February. Humidity is around 80% over the year.
Best month to visit the capital is May through October, because it has less rain. But beware though, the dry season in Jakarta is never completely dry. Even in August or July, you may have a few storms once in a while.
Jakarta’s climate is tropical and humid almost year-round; as it is so close to the equator, average temperature is almost exactly the same in January and July at about 82°F (28°C). Variation throughout the day is minimal as well, with low temperatures around 76°F (24°C) and highs of 88°F (31°C).
Best month to visit Bandung is during the dry season, which stretches across the months of June – September.
Bandung has a tropical climate and it has a significant amount of rainfall during the year. This is true even for the driest month. The temperature here averages 23.3 °C. The average annual rainfall is 2164 mm.
The driest month is August, with 68 mm of rainfall. With an average of 291 mm, the most precipitation falls in December. The warmest month of the year is April, with an average temperature of 23.7 °C. July has the lowest average temperature of the year. It is 22.5 °C
Best month to visit Yogyakarta is between April-October, with the months of July and August hardly getting any rainfall.
The climate is tropical in Yogyakarta. Most months of the year are marked by significant rainfall. The average annual temperature in Yogyakarta is 26.4 °C. Precipitation here averages 2157 mm. With an average of 27.1 °C, April is the warmest month. The lowest average temperatures in the year occur in July, when it is around 25.4 °C.
Best month to visit Bromo is during the dry season, which occurs between April-October. During this season, May to August are the best months with the chance of least rain
Bromo’s average temperature is 27.5°C, with lowest temperature lies at 22.5°C and highest temperature at 31°C. Average wind speed is 6 mph, with its highest lies at 8mph. Visibility is 5 miles. The lowest visibility, which is at 4 miles, occurs around period of October-November and April-May.
Central Indonesia Destination
Best month to visit Bali is April, May, June and September, just before and just after high season that occurs in July-August, and Christmas/New Year.
Bali has a tropical climate. The temperature here averages 20.9 °C. The average annual rainfall is 2183 mm.
The driest month is January, with 11 mm of rainfall. With an average of 390 mm, the most precipitation falls in September. The warmest month of the year is March, with an average temperature of 22.3 °C. August has the lowest average temperature of the year. It is 19.4 °C.
Best month to visit Gili is in June, July, August and September which has good average temperature.
On average, the temperatures are always high. Lowest temperature is 23°C and the highest temperature is 31°C. Water temperature is around 26°C – 29°C. Rain will mostly occur between December and February. Humidity is 80%.
9) Derawan Islands (Derawan, Maratua, Kakaban, Sangalaki)
Best month to visit Derawan is between June-September, when it has least rainfall. The weather is usually quite good on this destination. However, January often brings rain and the months of July/August can be windy.
It has a tropical climate. The temperature here averages 26.7 °C. The rainfall here averages 1874 mm. The least amount of rainfall occurs in September. Most of the precipitation here falls in November. The temperatures are highest on average in October, at around 27.1 °C with January as the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 26.4 °C.
Eastern Indonesia Destinations
10) Flores & Komodo
Best month to visit Flores & Komodo is between April-June and September-November.
The very dry season is between April and December with the coolest months of July and August having an average temperature of 30°C. Rainy season is between January and March, but Komodo does not have torrential rain as in the rest of Indonesia, and is relatively dry and sunny all year round. The average annual temperature is 25.5 °C in Komodo. The rainfall here averages 1266 mm.
The warmest month of the year is November, with an average temperature of 26.5 °C. The lowest average temperatures in the year occur in July, when it is around 24.2 °C. The driest month is September, with 14 mm of rainfall. The greatest amount of precipitation occurs in January, with an average of 269 mm.
Best month to visit Sumba is April to July, after the monsoon, when it does not rain any longer, and when it is still green.
During the year, there is little rainfall in Sumba. The average annual temperature is 26.5 °C in Sumba. The average annual rainfall is 796 mm. The driest month is January.
There is 0 mm of precipitation in January. Most precipitation falls in August, with an average of 282 mm. With an average of 30.7 °C, April is the warmest month. In January, the average temperature is 22.3 °C. It is the lowest average temperature of the whole year.
Best month to visit Wakatobi is during diving season, which occurs between March-December.
Wakatobi is a semi-dry region, with a total rainfall of less than 2,000 mm per year. Temperature range from 21°C to 35°C. Average temperature through the year is 27°C. Dry season is from May to October and rainy season is from November to April.
13) Pulo Cinta
Best month to visit Pulo Cinta is during diving season, which occurs between November-April.
Pulo Cinta has a tropical climate and significant rainfall most months, with a short dry season. The average annual temperature in Gorontalo is 26.6 °C. In a year, the average rainfall is 1490 mm. The driest month is September, with 57 mm of rainfall. In June, the precipitation reaches its peak, with an average of 195 mm.
The warmest month of the year is November, with an average temperature of 27.4 °C. At 26.0 °C on average, July is the coldest month of the year.
14) Raja Ampat
Best month to visit Raja Ampat is during dry season, between October-April, in contrast to western and central Indonesia which is in its rainiest period. Despite that, rain can unpredictably fall, although much less frequent during the dry season.
High humidity and high temperatures are making the weather pleasant at times, but also and partly tropical hot and humid. Average daytime and nighttime temperature is around 30°C. Humidity is around 83- 87% over the year.
